Closed/Open Guard Passing

Overview:

Class 10 Closed/Open Guard Passing

Warmups: Focus on - Closed guard stand ups. Glued foot push drill. Backward break falls.

Part 1 - Back sweep from closed guard (XX:25)

Part 1.1: Back sweep from closed guard

  1. Starting in closed guard

  2. *Opponent stands up* - Keep guard locked.

  3. Grab behind both ankles with hands (no thumb grib)

  4. Open guard to bounce hips off ground back up to ceiling to knock over opponent

  5. Walk hands around the side and finish on mount.

Part 2 - Standing kick back pass (XX:45)

Part 2.1: Timing the standing kick back

  1. Starting in closed guard on knees.

  2. Stand upright (partner should not unlock guard)

  3. Place both hands on the inside of the knee whilst putting weight on the same side foot (glue).

  4. A: *Opponent opens guard to perform back sweep*

  5. B: Kickback at the same time to land foot behind for balance.

  6. Control both ankles with hands while standing.

* Part 2.2: Torreando Drill

  1. Start standing with hands holding both ankles

  2. Swing feet to the right

  3. Take two steps left to kneeride

  4. Reset back to two hands on ankle

  5. Swing fee to the left

  6. Take two steps right to kneeride

  7. Reset back to two hands on ankle

  8. Repeat for 4 reps.

* Part 2.3: Standing kick back to torreando pass

  1. Standing kick back pass to both hands on ankles

  2. Torreando pass to kneeride

Situational:

  • Starting in close guard.

  • A-person (top) stands and tries to time the kickback sweep to double ankle control (no pass necessary).

  • B-person (bottom) tries to back sweep and finish on top (preferably mount).
